A Message to Faculty from the Provost

TO:  All Faculty
FROM:  Steven Lerman, Provost
RE:  Syllabus Upload

Last April, in response to a request from the Student Association, the Faculty Senate passed a resolution that sought the creation of a system through which faculty could provide students with additional information with which to make better informed decisions about course selection.  I am pleased to announce that faculty can now begin to use Blackboard to provide this information in a pilot to be run for the Fall 2015 semester.

Once logged into Blackboard, at the top of the My Blackboard tab, click on Public Syllabus Uploader, select your course and the term, and then Browse to select the PDF or Word document you wish to upload.  You may choose to provide a syllabus from a previous semester of the course, a draft syllabus for the upcoming semester, or another document that you feel will provide students with the information they need to make informed decisions about their courses.

As the resolution and the discussion of the Faculty Senate stated, students deserve adequate information before selecting their courses, and faculty seek motivated and prepared students for the courses they intend to teach.  Furthermore, students wish to know if the courses they are selecting will advance their study within their areas of interest, and faculty teach best to students who have selected courses appropriate to their interests.

I encourage all faculty to make this information available for their Fall 2015 courses as soon as possible.  Students will begin registering for their fall classes on March 23, 2015.
